A Farewell Summer in Kea: From Island Life to Agentic AI

Our three-week stay on Kea (Tzia) this July was unlike any summer before. We recently sold our island house—a positive, deliberate milestone for our family, but saying goodbye to a home filled with so many treasured memories naturally brings a touch of emotion.

Above all, this extended stay was designed for Katerina. Spending three peaceful weeks immersed in the Aegean warmth allowed her to rest deeply, clear her mind, and feel completely recharged ahead of her medical visit in Germany on August 2nd.

Week 1: US Friends, Sandcastles & A Great Group of Girls

The holiday began with wonderful summer energy as our close friends visited all the way from the United States with Tess and Ronan. Right from the first afternoon, Zoé, Iris, and the visiting friends clicked effortlessly. It was truly heartening to see a real group of girls playing, laughing, and teaming up for everything—from swimming and paddleboarding to building giant sandcastles under the straw umbrellas.

Naturally, the house quickly filled with the lively new vocabulary of the younger generation. Catchphrases like “gnarly” and “glokit” were thrown around at every occasion—whether rating a successful paddleboard jump, a swimming race, or a funny face across the dinner table. Having fun with these new terms became the unofficial soundtrack of our beach days.

Together we wandered through the historic labyrinth of Ioulida (Chora), taking in the hilltop panoramas. In the evenings, our terrace became the scene of unforgettable culinary exchanges: the girls prepared a delicious, authentic homemade moussaka that was truly the best, and in return, our American friends baked wonderful fresh homemade bread. Enjoying these feasts together as the sun dipped over the infinity pool made for the perfect summer evenings.

Week 2: Grandparents & The Deck Dance Performances

For the next ten days, Anita (Yiayia) and Panos (Papou) joined us at the house. Having the grandparents with us made the days feel unhurried and special. We shared long seafood feasts at traditional seaside tavernas, dining with the gentle sound of the Aegean waves right at our feet.

The undisputed highlight of every evening came after dark on the outdoor wooden deck. Iris and Zoé transformed the terrace into their personal amphitheater. With smartphone flashlights serving as theatrical spotlights against the night sky, the girls performed imaginative, high-energy dance routines full of choreography, spontaneous laughter, and pure childhood joy.

Each had her signature summer anthem on repeat: Iris brought infectious Greek pop energy dancing to “ANASAINO KAI ZALIZOMAI” (LILA), while Zoé rocked the deck with her stylish moves to “Dai Dai” (Shakira & Burna Boy).

The Remote Island Office & Discovering Agentic AI

Balancing summer vacation with work was an essential part of the trip. Having set up reliable network equipment and solid Wi-Fi throughout the house, I was able to work between 1 and 4 hours every morning with a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea. The girls were happily occupied with their morning shows and pool games, giving everyone their own comfortable rhythm.

The standout discovery of this holiday was diving deeply into Agentic AI, introduced and guided by Rulian (Julian). From diagnosing and optimizing local network configurations on the fly to automating multi-year WordPress media fixes and orchestrating custom scripts, working alongside autonomous AI agents completely shifted my approach to technology. It turned routine technical tasks into fast, creative problem-solving.

Looking Ahead: From Kea to New Horizons

Selling our house naturally brings a gentle wave of nostalgia; every corner holds years of laughter, summer dinners, and milestone family moments. Yet alongside those memories comes a genuine sense of excitement for what lies ahead. Returning to the same island every summer was wonderful, but over time it can become routine. Since our holiday time each year is precious and limited, moving on opens up the freedom to explore new destinations together as a family—taking inspiration from our travels to places like Scotland and discovering fresh corners of the world. For us, embracing that curiosity and variety feels truly fulfilling.

The Moonlit Ferry: Beating the Aegean Gale

Getting off the island on our final day turned into an adventure of its own. Strong gale-force winds around 7 Beaufort and rough waves had halted all sea connections, forcing us to reschedule our crossing twice. After three consecutive days of cancellations, Friday night’s boat was the only ferry operating. When it finally arrived at the port, the scene was pure organized chaos with crowds scrambling to disembark and board.

Once on board, Papou Panos knew the exact spot to head for: a well-protected corner on the outdoor deck where we could breathe fresh sea air, stay shielded from the whipping wind, and avoid any seasickness. Huddled closely together as a family in our sheltered haven, we were treated to a magical surprise—sitting directly facing the glowing full moon as it lit up the Aegean water. The boat rocked, but the crossing proved much smoother than we had feared.

We later learned that all maritime navigation was forbidden again for the entire weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Catching that single Friday night ferry was a true sign of destiny, allowing us to return safely to the mainland and travel right on schedule to Germany on Sunday.
